My favorite project to create was the monster. The monster was my favorite because it was very sculptural and I was able to use a lot of creativity. The guidelines for this project were very flexible, so I was able to create almost whatever I wanted and I enjoyed doing that. I also liked the monster because I was able to make something that holds candy which I thought was very useful.
A time when I struggled was when I was making my large coil pot. Since my clay was so wet, it kept collapsing and it made it very difficult for me to create the shape that I wanted for my vessel. I was able to overcome this by taking advice from my teacher and applying what she told me to do to my project. With the help of my teacher, my project turned out really good!
When I first walked into ceramics, all I knew was that I enjoyed playing with an earthy material. I also had some idea about making a pinch pot, but I didn't know the correct technique in making pinch pots and I didn't know what a good pinch pot looked like. Over the semester I have learned so much about ceramics. I learned about pinching pinch pots with the area between my thumb and my finger, I learned how to use many different tools such as ribs, and I learned the correct way to smooth projects. I also learned several different methods for creating bowls/cups such as the method I used when making pinch pots and the method I used when making my monster. The first project that I made was my pinch pot. Although my pinch pot was very successful, there were still several errors that I learned how to correct throughout the year such as making it pinky thick and making it smooth. My last project was a good thickness, smooth, and I was able to apply my creativity to make it into a candle holder. Overall, I had a great time in ceramics and I learned more than I ever I thought I could in ceramics. I look forward to taking ceramics two and learning how to use the wheel!
